The fire broke out on the Hercules 265 jack-up, which was operating for Walter Oil & Gas Corporation at block South Timbalier 220.
Hercules Offshore said that “late yesterday evening, the natural gas flowing from the well ignited which spread to the rig”, adding that the extent of damage to the rig was unknown.
The company said it was awaiting daylight in order to “assess any potential environmental incident” at the scene 55 miles off the coast of Louisiana.
