Gazprom inked a memorandum of understanding with the Anglo-Dutch supermajor in June for construction of a third train at Sakhalin-2 in Russia’s far east, as well as a wider strategic pact in the gas sector ranging from upstream to sales, including possible asset swaps.

Development of the Yuzhno-Kirinskoye off Sakhalin Island - a project known as Sakhalin-3 - has been seen as central to that alliance as it would allow the two companies to expand Sakhalin-2, which is presently their sole existing LNG venture.
