Vetco Gray said its slimbore wellhead systems would enable Shell to drill and complete wells using smaller risers and blowout prevents, allowing it to use conventionally rated rigs to target the BC-10 project's prospects in water up to 1930 metres deep. The use of smaller rigs in deep-water exploration would help to keep costs down, it said.
The project would mark the first time Shell used a surface blowout preventer for deep-water in-field development, Vetco Gray said.
