Japanese floater specialist Modec and compatriot Toyo Engineering have secured an Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for an innovative blue ammonia floating production storage and offloading vessel design.

The blue ammonia floater concept aims to “produce ammonia from the gas supplied by oil and gas FPSO located nearby,” Modec said in a statement on Thursday.

“This blue ammonia FPSO is intended to produce and store blue ammonia by using associated gas, which has conventionally been re-injected into the reservoir without specific applications,” Modec said.
