The pair were the sole winners under Iraq's first licensing round, which failed to live up to expectations because of tough terms demanded by the Oil Ministry in Baghdad.
Rumaila was the only field awarded out of the eight oil and gas fields on offer.
The bid round represented the first opportunity for international oil companies to return to Iraq since they were expelled in 1972 amid a wave of nationalisation among the Persian Gulf states.
