His workplace today may be a plush office in Houston, but Chiles has had his fair share of hands-on experience on the drill floor since joining the industry in 1972 after graduating with a BBA in petroleum land management from the University of Texas in Austin.
He started out in his native US, then spent 1973 and 1974 in Aberdeen working on rigs in the UK sector of the North Sea before returning to the Gulf of Mexico.
