AUVs have been used over the last two or three years in a deep-water survey role but the focus of the Alive project was to develop a way of adding simple mechanical tasks to their range.
These unmanned mini-submarines can perform tasks without the need of an umbilical and support ship, unlike remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs), and therefore major savings can be made.
